Taking Diabetes medications Properly

Most diabetics follow meal plan and exercise on regular basis. Most of the time following meal plan and staying physically active are not enough to keep blood sugar under control , therefore doctors recommend medicine to lower blood sugar levels .

Diabetes medications are usually given to help keep blood sugar as close as possible to the target range .

Diabetes is either treated by pills or by injectable medications .

It’s very important for you to know whether you’re on the right medications or not .

Pills are normally given to people with Type 2 Diabetes to encourage pancreas to release more insulin , reduce the amount of sugar made by liver , reduces kidney reabsorption of sugar and increases sugar output in urine , increase level of insulin after meals , and slows digestion of carbohydrates .

Injectable medication which includes insulin and GLP-1 which are given to type 1 and type 2 diabetics .

Insulin: Insulin works like a KEY to open up the cells for sugar to get inside the cells . Cells will use sugar to create energy or it will get stored inside the cells for later use

There’s many types of insulin depending of how quickly they start to work and how long they work in the body.  Health care provider will determine the right dose of insulin for each patient dose usually varies from one person to another .

There’s long acting insulin which will provide 24 hours coverage , rapid acting insulin which is injected 5-15 minutes before each meal, premixed insulin which has long acting and rapid acting insulin and it’s used before breakfast and  before dinner .

GLP-1: It helps manage Blood sugar by helping Beta cells release more insulin if blood sugar level goes up, also helps liver decrease the amount of sugar that’s release into the blood , and helps break down food slowly which will delay the way that food gets into the blood after meals .

GLP-1  is as a daily injection or it’s a long acting which will be given once a week.

In Summary:

There’s so many different types of Diabetic pills , also many different types of injectable medications , however healthy life style & regular exercise are the best medication for diabetes because it’s the biggest supporter for those medications to help achieve blood sugar goals.
